the Y is followed be a blinking quad
now when i want to do a sytem test, keyboard test or clear memory

Hi;

The display area with the Y and the blinking square (input cue in replace mode) is usually filled with the softmenu labels. This means that, in your case, input is being performed. So, it seems to me your HP28S has a locked [Y] key. Maybe you can loose it, but I have no clue about how could you do that. Should check the calculator first.

Not so much of help, sorry.

Cheers.

The "blinking quad" is a cursor. It's in alpha-entry mode after the Y got pressed.

Try hitting the backarrow key to clear it.
