Yahoo Series 80 group
Message #1 Posted by Everett Kaser on 22 June 2006, 11:34 a.m.

Since this group/site is predominately focused on the HP calculators (it's GOOD to focus, not complaining :-), I've set up a group on Yahoo for the discussion and sharing of all matters related to HP's Series 80 computers (HP-85, HP-83, HP-87, HP-86). It's at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/hpseries80/

You'll need a Yahoo ID in order to join, but those are free and easy to get if you don't already have one. If you're interested in Series 80 hardware, software, emulators, peripherals, etc, please consider joining the group!

HP85 manual?

Signed up...thanks Everett.

Speaking of the HP85, I have the HP Museum DVD which is supposed to have the PDF of this manual on it, but it is at home.

I also found the Series 80 website http://www.series80.org which has links to download the manual, but appears to require a username/password and I don't see how to register (or I'm too dumb to know how to defeat the anti-bot protection).

Anyone have a PDF of the HP85 manual they could email me or point me to a direct link where I can download it?

What I want to do is just see examples on how to load things from tape and disk and run them. I had an HP87XM, but that was years ago and I can't remember.

Want to play with the great HP85 Emulator!

Anyone help?

When you try to download a manual, a message box appears. Read the message text carefully, it contains the user name and password.

The reason why vp introduces the password protection is:

Large files are password protected because automated downloaders have been a significant drain on this system's resources.

yes, for username, password, just enter pdf, iamhuman respectively.

Sorry for this inconvenience, but bots were blindly downloading pdf files with unsearchable image scans of manuals doing good to neither them or my site.

I considered having a discussion group when I was designing the Series80 web site, but decided against it because I think that using an existing forum brings more people to the discussion (e.g. someone sees a series 80 posting and decides to join the community by purchasing an HP-87 or even better finding that forgotten HP-85 in the attic :-).

Another thing is that the Series 80 community is not a huge one and is quite aligned to the HP Calcs forum. E.g. I have lots of other HP calculators and read this forum anyway, so if anything is being posted on Series 80 machines, I will see it for sure. If its posted in another list, I may not see it, or I may see it after some time.

Also there are people who may not subscribe to the Series80 list, but if they see a question that rings a bell in this forum will respond. So again posting on a more general forum is better.

Finally, I do not recall anybody telling us to get off the list because our postings are inappropriate (like people do for HP printer-related queries or postings about HP laptops etc), so we are welcome here, so why leave?

I'm not suggesting that "we leave", and I agree (for many of the reasons you state above) that it would be wise to post SOME things here as well. It's really a matter of "focus". This forum is SO busy, with such a fast turn-over in messages, that a message doesn't stick around very long (on the daily forum view). Some questions/postings would be appropriate to be here, some would be just as well in a more "focussed" group. Maybe I'm all wet (wouldn't be the first time... :-)))

Hi,

Vassilis posted:

    FWIW, I agree 100%.

"Also there are people who may not subscribe to the Series80 list, but if they see a question that rings a bell in this forum will respond."

That's exactly my case. I've professionally programmed HP-85, 86, and 87 computers for a number of years and I'm still quite proficient at their programming and quirks, even have lots of materials for them (manuals, listings, commercial programs, etc). But I don't have the time for them and so would not subscribe to a separare list, too many lists already require my attention, thank you. However, if I see any question or topic about them in this MoHP Forum, I'm likely to try to help, or at least contribute some opinion, like this one.

My own experience with my postings here is that usually you post something, then it make take a few days to get any reply, to the point that your original message disappears from the daily, until, suddenly, answers start pouring, for two, three, or even four weeks after the original post. Applied to your case, this means that you shouldn't be worried by not getting instant answers, even if your post does disappear from the daily: knowledgeable and interested people will notice your post anyway and will simply reply when they get the required info and/or the necessary free time to reply, even if some days have elapsed.
"Maybe I'm all wet (wouldn't be the first time... :-)))"

Maybe. Anyway, here's my (unsolicited, but honest) advice: don't you think that having a more "focused" list will get you more or better answers, even if you long for the "instant gratification" of quick replies. Learn to be less eager to get them, even if you find it frustrating at first. In the long run, the mere statistics of this forum's many tried and trusted contributors will mean more and better posts for you. Focus means little without audience.

Best regards from V.
