Copying Private HP41 programs
Message #1 Posted by Bill Lafferty on 10 June 2006, 5:13 a.m.

Is it possible to successfully copy Private HP41 programs from old cassettes and magnetic cards onto new media? I keep getting several "medium error" messages when I try to copy the programs into my HP41CX before they eventually load. I have unused cassettes and magnetic cards on hand.

One private program in particular just keeps giving me a "Packing, Try Again" message over and over and will not load at all.

I have a HP41CX, two cassette drives and a floppy disc drive.

Once you load the program or data on the HP-41C you can use synthetic programming techniques to unprotect the program. Then you can write it on a new card/tape/disc in its unprotected state.

It may mean that there is not enough memory to load it. Try clearing all memory, doing a SIZE 000, and try to load it again.

Hello Bill!

The nearest method I know is this Hpmuseum article.

I haven't tried it though, so you'll have to check if it works.

Let us know!

Hi Etienne, guys;

I tested it some(long)time ago and it worked fine with the HP41 I used for this purpose.

Cheers.

Thanks for the replies - are you both saying that I have to remove the Private flag in the program after loading it into the HP41 before I can copy it from the HP41 onto a new medium?

Yes we are.

You can not act directly on a program located on tape, card or floppy.

First you have to load it in your calculator. Then remove the private flag and write it back on mass storage.

However, it seems we have to solve 2 different problems here:

1 - How to remove the private flag from a program you have successfully loaded from mass storage (this is the main thing we're discussing).

2 - Rereading your first post, I see that you get a "medium error" message which is a completely different issue. This message can appear when the medium is either defective or partially/completely erased (or for a floppy when trying to write a write-protected disk).

Therefore, problem 2 should be solved before you have any success with problem 1.

Greetings from France

Etienne

Thanks for all your help - I'm gradually getting back into the swing of HP41 use after several years. I found the simpler instructions in museum archive 06 Message #4 Posted by HrastProgrammer on 1 Aug 2002, 1:57 a.m., worked well, and I have been able to remove the private flag, and save the programs to a new cassette tape

Glad it worked!

Hope your tapes are in good condition, I was worried by the "Medium Err" message".

If the medium is card or tape, then yes, you have to load it on your 41, unprotect the file (essentially by changing some bit in the END statement), and save it again unprotected.

If the medium is a floppy disk, then you can use Tony's utilities in a Linux environment to fix the files.
