Spice soldered or no soldered by year?
Message #1 Posted by Ruben on 14 Feb 2007, 10:02 p.m.

Since my beloved HP-34C is acting flaky, even with new batteries, I'm thinking I have the dreaded non-soldered version. It was made in 1980, and I guess the run went to 1983, so where is the cutoff for the soldered versions?

Every time I see a Spice for sale on Ebay, they all seem to come from 1980 or earlier, at least in my short time of looking. Is it that they didn't produce as many of them after that year, or just that people primarily sell the flaky ones. I'd love to get my hands on a 34C without this problem.

I guess I'll give the pin cleaning a try first.

Hello, Ruben --

I have non-soldered HP-34C's from 1980 and 1981 (S/N 2110Sxxxxx), and a soldered one from 1982 (S/N 2225Sxxxxx). The HP-34C was discontinued in 1983, but was still sold alongside the HP-11C (which debuted in 1981) and HP-15C (1982).

I'm sure that sales of the HP-34C suffered after the Voyager series hit the shelves, and in particular the HP-15C, which rendered the HP-34C obsolete. Only a user who strongly preferred the LED display and the vertical layout would have reason to choose the HP-34C over the HP-15C. In my case, the electronics salesman steered me away from the HP-34C I intended to buy in November 1983, and convinced me to purchase a HP-15C.
