Update on the HP 97 sold for $3250
Message #1 Posted by gvnelson on 27 Jan 2007, 2:33 p.m.

This was so hard to believe that I kept the item in my watch list.

The buyer (brunoh3318) has received positive feedback from the seller.

The seller (riatla) has been on ebay for close to 10 years and has a feedback rating of 8411.

So I'd say it looks like he payed up.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would spend half a million dollars on a car, but some people do it anyway! If you can spare the money, and you really want the item, then why not? Imagine what could happen if Bill Gates and Larry Ellison got in a bidding war over something....

Hello!

... but hopefully over something, that I am selling :-) BTW: I also have a n.i.b. HP-97 with very, super-extremely! rare Italian documentation! So Bill and Larry, you want me to place it on eBay for you?

But this auction here really is a bit strange: The buyers eBay history has only 3 items, all of which are hp-97s. The first two, he bought for around 300$ each (still pretty expensive, I think), so why shoud he spend ten times as much on the third one? I could understand it, if Madonna would deliver it to his home herself and sign it in his presence, but otherwise?

Greetings, Max

If you have one with documentation in Dutch, maybe we could do some business. Not for $3250, though. ;-)

Weeeelll, if you don't want to spend $3250, I will lower the price to $3240 and translate the manual into Dutch myself, if necessary :-)

Tot ziens, Max

Weeeell, one of my 97s comes from Italy (40 kms from home, actually) with proper literature.
I'll keep an eye on your auction and offer mine to the second bidder... ;)

Greetings,
Massimo

P.S. Do you have the errata and addendum card? :)

Ciao Massimo!

I'd love to have an HP-97 on my desk. I don't mind the documentation being in Italian. I will start saving now. Please allow me at least twenty years before putting it at eBay so I can gather the money :-)

Regards,

Gerson.

Mine is in Pennsylvania for a few weeks for surgery with Randy. I wish I could say I miss it terribly but my HP41s with their various adventures (card reader, IR module, etc) have been most diverting.

Les

p.s. Gerson, you have mail, or at least will when I get to the postal outlet after church. Shouldn't take 20 years, though, just a couple of weeks at most!

Ciao Massimo!

Is there an Italian version of the HP-12C manual? I haven't been able to find a pdf file, but I'd like to know it the manual has been translated to Italian. By the way, one of these days I found in a used-book store a nice spiral-bound 12C manual in Spanish (1987, printed in Germany). I really don't need it, but as the price was only R$ 10 ($4.70) I decided to take it home.

Regards,

Gerson

Ciao Gerson,
as strange as it may sound I don't think I own one, but I have italian versions of manuals for 41*, 42S, 32S, 17BII, 97, 22S and others I don't remember now...

Being the 12C the best selling HP calculator ever I think it would be strange not to have translated the manual in every language known to man!

I will ask a friend o'mine when I'll see him.

Massimo

Thanks! (NT)

Ola Gerson!

Bill already contacted me and offered the complete Vista set in exchange (734+ editions, italian docs), do you think it's a fair trade?

:-)

Stay well and let me know if you will still miss a 97 in the next few years...

Greetings,
Massimo

I would guess that for every 100 hp-97s with english documentations, there is one with italian, french, german, spanish,... handbooks, so every non-english hp calculator is a much more rare and precious item . We are lucky to live in the non-english speaking part of the world, this automatically adds a lot to the value of our collections :-) BTW: A few weeks ago, I bought an hp-80 with spanish manual and backplate from a gentleman in the Netherlands, this combination alone adds anonther 100 Euros to the value of the calculator.

Honestly, I don't know, because I keep this calculator (together with some other larger ones) at my parents home in Italy. So I will have to wait for the next visit there (probably easter), before I can check.

Saluti, Max

Bidding Wars of the rich, was HP 97 sold for $3250

Well, Larry Ellison and Paul Allen got in a bidding war--over bragging rights for having the world's longest yacht. They each kept them secret and one of them--I forget which--added an extra 10 meters or something at the last minute!

Suppose the seller sold the calculator to the buyer for a reasonable quantity ($700-$800?), but I donīt think the seller paid $3250 for the HP97.
