HP-01 with untypical serial
Message #1 Posted by Matthias Wehrli on 9 Nov 2006, 12:59 a.m.

Hi

Got a used HP-01 in gold (mainly for trading as you can see in the classified ads)... Today I recognized, that this watch has a serial that begins with 9999A. Who can explain this to me? What happened here?

Matthias

Your watch will be manufactured in week 99 in the year 2059 in the USA.

Nice one:-)))

Actually, maybe it's a prototype,
or someone just forgot to adjust the date stamp?

Silly Marcus, there is no week 99.

Matthias, the watch will be manufactured in week 47 in 2060. The interesting question is how it got timewaped back to you.

Perhaps this watch had warranty work, perhaps even the whole watch got replaced. (Dunno where the S/N is on an HP01.)

It's fairly common for warranty replacement items to have weird S/Ns.

How do you know? Maybe by 2059 we'll have moved the Earth farther from the Sun to counteract global warming. :-)

Speaking of untypical serial

I have a similar question. I recently purchased an HP48GX with a black LCD. On the back, the serial number engraved onto the plastic is clearly an Indonesian serial number. However, there is also an official sticker of some sort on the back with the HP logo and a Singapore serial number.

My _guess_ is that the sticker indicates the replacement serial number. Perhaps your watch was similarly replaced?

I honestly doubt it. I've seen more than my fair share of 48's and I've never seen such a sticker on one. The only Singapore origin stickers of *any* kind I've ever seen were inside 30 series units and 41's. By the time they got to Pioneers and 48's, HP didn't do anything to maintain serial numbers on replacment machines. Serial X went in, serial Y came back. Not at all like the LED days.

A couple of questions:

  1. Does the s/n of the Inonesian unit correspond with a black screen unit?
  2. Is there any type of date code on the sticker and if so, what is it?

Here's a slightly different HP-01 to contemplate.
