MLDL2000 update
Message #1 Posted by Meindert Kuipers on 16 Oct 2006, 4:13 p.m.

Just finished assembling the last units from regular production. If you have not heard from me, you will have to wait for a small extra production run that I am scheduling. I should be able to satisfy the current waiting list.

One special rebuild is remaining, I will take that to the Allschwil meeting. Last week I have tested an improvement, which is a relatively simple modification. This allows a goldcap (if it is installed) to be charged from USB instead of from the HP41. This saves battery power and allows the unit to be connected to USB for recharging. The standard cap built into the assembled units has a value of 0.1F, and keeps the SRAM contents alive for a few week. I have also tested a 1F supercap and that works fine as well.

Another addition is to pimp your MLDL2000 and add some bling-bling by using some (blue!) LEDs. The LEDs indicate MLDL2000 activity, USB activity and one can be user controlled (but not fully tested yet). To save battery power, these only work when USB is connected, the LEDs are powered from USB. This special version will be shown in Allschwill. Schematics and instructions to be published within a few days.

Looking forward to meeting some of you in Allschwil!

Saaay, that blue LED mod wouldn't be in my unit, the one you just completed assembling, would it? 8)

Regardless, I'm glad to have the USB charging functionality. Thanks!

Howard

Nope, I'm out of both this month.

Besides, it will give me an incentive to go back to learning soldering technique. 8)

Hi, Meindert;

thanks for sharing the news with us. Good news, indeed!

Allow me a couple of questions?

1-Although I do not intend to do so in my first unit, that works perfectly fine, can the new modifications be part of existing, previously built units? I mean, the blue LED and the USB-charging golden cap?
2-Any news about the updated MLDL2000 mannager, mainly regarding the FLASH ROM SR handling? My unit is one of those with Sector 34 issue...

Again, thanks for the good news.

Best regards.

Luiz (and others)

The USB charging is a relatively simple operation, requires only a little bit of soldering. In a unit that is already assembled is is somewhat tricky, just do not drink too much coffee before the operation. I will publish the pictures and show how it is done.

The blue LED is a bit more difficult, since it also requires a resistor in series with the LED, and you have to understand which side of the LED is the cathode. For more LEDs I recommend an additional experimentation PCB where the resistors can be mounted. Also instructions for this to follow.

Visitors of the Allschwil meeting can take there MLDL2000 with them. I will bring my tools to do the USB charging modification on site (but no LEDs).

The MLDL2000 Manager software is more or less modified. Actually all units show this bug, except the proto's. After the Allschwil meeting I will focus a bit more on the software side and release a new version of M2kM with this problem fixed.
