HP48G ROM K (What exactly was wrong with the port handling?)

I got my hands on an HP48G with ROM K. I've tried searching the comp.sys.hp48 newsgroup but could not find any specific detail on the problems that ROM K had concerning ports. The best I could find was the FAQ which simply mentioned that ROM K was restricted to the HP48G due to the problems with ports.
Does anyone have any more specific detail?
Also, how rare is ROM K anyway?
