42X
Message #1 Posted by CW (Maui, Hawaii) on 22 Jan 2006, 11:08 p.m.

Greetings,

I am considering 42X. I was looking at a list of things about it when I came to line #6

(6) You own the HP-42S and you have the ability to dump the ROM contents from the calculator to the computer so I can incorporate your ROM into the emulator.

Does anyone have a description of how to do this with pictures?

Also I noticed elsewhere that you cannot save data to port memory, I assume then that you can save data to calculator memory?

Thanks, CW

The instructions that worked for me are in this archive at Christoph Gießelink's EMU42 site. It involves using a 128K HP48g,or an HP48sx with at least 70K or so free. That assumes the US version of the 42S, whose ROMs are 64K in size. The international versions use 2 such ROMs for 128K total, and you then need more than that amount of memory to hold the ROM images and the library that does the copying

Howard

Hi, Howard;

just a question: isn't the HP17BII the Pioneer with an extra ROM with messages in foreign languages, Portuguese included? I have a working HP42S (and one that's not) and had the chance to upgrade a few ones to 32KRAM, mainly models commercialized in Brazil. None of them had the extra ROM.

Is taht correct?

Cheers.

Hi, Luiz,

You are right! I had read JF Garnier's document here "HP-42S - New Facts" that describes how there is provision for an add-on ROM in the HP-42S. When I read Christoph's document, I conflated his statement that the 17B had domestic and international versions with JF's write up on the 42S and drew the wrong conclusion. Since my 42S is a US English model, I never got corrected by reality, as it were. 8) Thanks for catching that!

So dumping a 42S ROM should never take more than 70K, as Christoph's document clearly states.

Regards,
Howard.

If you mean HP-42X 'virtual' ports then yes, you can save only programs there (this is some kind of static program storage). In extended version of HP-42X you have 96K RAM which so you have plenty of memory available for data (and programs), I think.

This is from my page:

In addition to the 96K of HP-42S RAM, some versions of HP-42X support the port memory. Its purpose is to store programs for long term use. Data cannot be stored to port memory. Programs cannot be directly executed from port memory but they can be dinamically loaded to the main memory and executed. There are two ports inside HP-42X: Port1 (RAM port, size 16K for HP42X48L, 30K for HP42X49L and 31K for EXTENDED versions) and Port2 (ROM port, size 32K). These are 'virtual' HP-42S ports which have nothing to do with the real HP-48/49 ports. Port memory isn't affected by "Memory Clear".
