49G+
Message #1 Posted by Chan Tran (USA) on 20 Dec 2005, 9:30 a.m.

I think it's time for me to add the 49G+ to my collection. I am wondering how do I find the best version of the 49G+. I understand there are several version of this calculator out there.

I bought one from Eric at Hpcalc.org . I have always been happy in my dealings with him. And he is knowledgable.

Or you can sometimes find good deals via web searches or online auctions.

I think that HPShopper has the most recent, but if not, it's not hard at all to download the latest ROM version onto an SD card and upload it into the 49G+. (No more hardwire connections from calc to computer unless you want to!)

I heard that some early version of the 49G+ has bad keyboard. I would like to avoid this problem. I know many of the retailers would have very old stock as this particular model does not sell very well I think.

I had one (two actually) with a keypad that was very insensitive to entries. I had to push pretty hard. After the ROM 2.00 upgrade, the problem was solved.

1. Good choice. 2. Get the newest keyboard possible. Does Joe Horn have any left?

Actually it's a little more hit and miss. I've had an older one (2004 from Joe Horn) and a newer one (2005 from Amazon). The older one is actually better quality (print quality on the painted keys, etc.) and less stiff. I think Kinpo initially tried to fix missed keys by making the keyboard stiffer. Later it turned out the most of the keyboard problem was in software. So the stiffer keyboard was unnecessary in the end. With the latest ROM, either should perform fine.

Joe has recently stated he doesn't have any more calculators for sale.
