48-series question about downloads from PC
Message #1 Posted by Stephen Easterling on 22 Sept 2005, 8:59 p.m.

I am jumping the gun asking this because I have not seriously sat down to program my recently-acquired 48GX (having too much fun with some older HPs now), but my question is this:

I would like to dump tables of data into my 48GX from PC. Can this be done using something like WordPad, Word, Excel if I properly delimit that data. Ideally, two - four columns of numbers available to the user at the touch of a button.

Thanks in advance for any advice or direction on this. I originally bought a 49G+ thinking it would be better suited for this, but I hated the keypad and sold it. That's when I went for a 48GX and bought a memory card (and other goodies for it).

The files are best written on a "text editor", but a "word processor" will work as long as you save the file as plain text, to avoid having word processor control codes and sequences added to the file. I don't know about Excel.

I suggest first uploading a variable from the calculator to the PC, to see how the transfer header should look.

"ASCII" mode transfers to/from the 48GX can be done with Kermit, but assuming a recent version of MS Windows, the Kermit-based HPComm ("HP PC Connectivity Kit") may be easier.

By installing the Xmodem Server library that's included with the Xmodem-based Conn4x ("hp48gII and hp49g+ PC Connectivity Kit"), you can use Conn4x for "text" transfers, which are very similar to Kermit "ASCII" transfers, and should be faster.

Try some searches of the newsgroup http://groups.google.com/group/comp.sys.hp48?; useful search strings may be "transfer header", "ASCII transfer" and "translation".

Regards,
James

Hello,

perhaps an appropiet Excel Add-In is what would serve your needs best. Have a look at http://www.hpcalc.org/hp48/pc/misc/hp48xla.zip. I've tried it myself with a 49G and it worked great.

Have fun

Karl
