Redistributing HP manuals
Message #1 Posted by Thomas Okken on 6 July 2005, 10:43 a.m.

I would like to create an HTML version of the HP-42S manual, to distribute with Free42. Does anyone know what HP's position would be on something like that? I gather HP has no problem with Dave Hicks selling copies of their manuals on CD, but to use their documentation with what could be viewed as a competing product might be a different matter. Who could I contact within HP to request permission?

Any insights would be welcome!

Hi, Thomas;

if you accept my suggestion and if you are willing to go ahead with it, consider a quick reference guide or a brief guide, based on the original manual, where you explain each possible function in brief with som examples. There is no problem writing books about HP calculators, and I see no problem writing an on-line brief guide as well, just avoid copying the original text. There is already an index with references to all available operations/functions in the HP42S manual. You could start there, groupping commands/functions on areas, for example.

Success!

Hmm, yes, maybe I should just write a complete manual from scratch... I could even sell it to all those people who bought an expensive HP-42S with no manual on eBay. :-D

Ssshhh... Not so loud... Others may hear you and go ahead selling photocopies for $(x100)

Tom,

As a technical writer (and also programming book author) maybe I can help. We can do this in several ways. I can do the editing, write examples, writer a certain part. I love the 42s AND your software.

Thanks for the offer, Namir! I'll have to think about this a bit.
