Early HP-41C keyboard differences
Message #1 Posted by Arne Helme on 22 May 2005, 10:45 a.m.

When comparing a HP-41C from 1979 (1937A) and one from 1980 (2037A)I noticed differences in the surface material and printed letters in on keyboard plate. The one from 1979 has polished plate with thick letters and is in this respect quite unlike the newer models, even the one from 1980.

Just curious, were there many such production changes in the early production year of the 41C?

I bought the 41C when it was just introduced and then I lost it a couple of years later and bought the CV to replace it. I noticed significant different in the keyboards of the two. I can't remember how the original 41C keyboard is like now but I think it's less slant and a bit taller.

I forgot to mention that both of the HP41Cs that I looked at have the tall keys found on early models. Still the two calculators look differently.

Hi Chan Tran, Arne, guys;

I bought my HP41C in 1981 in Brazil, and it already had the final production keys. Anyway, I saw an earlier HP41C with the taller keys (the only one I saw so far) and the keys looked a lot like the ones in the Spices (HP3x series) and were a little bit harder to press. I remember that I entered an HP program of maintenance for calculators, and the mainboard of the original 1981 HP41C was replaced for a newer one, an HP41CV without the RAM IC's, meaning it has the space for the additional RAM while the earlier unit used five RAM IC's to build the whole 64 registers (448 bytes). The orignal case (keyboard included), however, was kept.

Only to add a few info.

Luiz (Brazil)
