While I agree with your statement that it's best to use
the calculator than to indefinitely keep it in a safe, there's a problem with your "example", namely the fact that you can easily go to the nearest store and buy another "valuable device", say another PDA, or another computer, or another TV, ...
Now try and get an HP42S (HP-15C, HP-29C) just as easily ...
Even better, do your very best (even eBay) and try and get a SHARP PC-1425 Statistics (or a PC-1440 CAP-X, or a PC-1445 CASE) Pocket Computer, price notwithstanding ...
Should you ruin your TV, you can get another in less than 24 hours, give or take 20 hours. Should you ruin (or lose) your HP42S, it can take a number of days or weeks (and some risks) to get another. If it's an HP-29C, it may take a number of months or years. And in the case of the aforementioned SHARP machines, it might take you even longer, if ever.
Price's not the problem. The problem is availability.
