Breaking Private on HP71
Message #1 Posted by Forrest on 6 Nov 2004, 10:03 p.m.

I have a Topcon PROPAC module, and I have called the company and they no longer have any information. I would like to break private to view and interpret the basic code, or obtain documentation from someone.

Dear Forrest,
You need first the Forth-Assembler ROM.
I have somewhere a program for unprivating any file on HP-71B.
Let you know its listing soon.

Regards,

Raymond

Dear Raymond,
I'm like a fish... my memory is refreshed every five seconds.
I had an HP-71B and was only using Forth-Assembler ROM for unprivating files.
You might find what you are talking about in one of the four versions of JPCROM.
I don't know really. I have somewhere or elsewhere something about that.
I should have moved this summer but my boss found that I would be useful here for the next year.
I have to search in the numerous boxes...
Please be patient.

One way is to copy the ROM to a independant RAM (32k if it is the size of the target ROM) with a non-restricted PEEK function like found in the JPCROM, then POKE at the right nibbles to remove the PRIVATE status.

Dear J-F,

Thank you for the help. I guess the question now is which is easier to obtain - a Forth Assembler Rom or the JPCROM. I did a lot of programming for the HP41 back in its day, creating survey programs that did things that the module didn't, like remembering coordinate points by number. Later that became an interest with the HP71 which had a unique survey module. My interest in the HP71 has been re-kindled and I have a couple of survey ROMS (not HP) that are well out of date, but my interest is in what problems they solved and how they solved them.

Your suggestion also seems to be a viable solution. I assume that the JPCROM is as hard to obtain at the Forth ROM. I am sure that I used to have information on what nibbles made the program "Private" but I will have to look through my owners and reference manuals.

It is one of those things where I used to have all the PPC issues, and everything associated with the HP41 and HP71 but alas it disappeared a number of years ago. Oh, do I wish I could find it someplace in my storage.

Thanks, It is greatly appreciated.

I think that there may be versions of the PEEK/POKE in the lex file collection ftp://ftp.hpmuseum.org/lif/swap

Vassilis and Alain,

Thank you,

There are few places on earth where people come together and freely share their intellect. Thank you all and especially MoHPC for this forum.

I don't participate much here, but continue to be amazed at the wealth of knowledge demonstrated here daily.

Dear Emmanuel,

Unlike you my memory doesn't refresh, pieces just wither and fall off. I had an HP71 way back in time, and as I recall there is ways to break private. Of course that computer and all its ROMS went to others. Now I am back and trying to remember. Thank you for your help. Now I remember that the Forth Assembler Rom was one that I had, and evidently need to acquire again.

Your help, and Raymond's, are greatly appreciated.

I found three file that could do what you look for :

UNPRIV LEX 105 03/19/91 21:23

UNPRIVLX LEX 105 03/24/91 07:35

UNPRLEX LEX 841 03/24/91 07:36

Email me your address if you want a copy of the files.

I would still gladly also have the LEX files
Thank you!
