Programming HP12C
Message #1 Posted by Don on 3 Nov 2004, 8:14 p.m.

How do I program an alpha formula (a note actually) on a 12C? I can do it on a 17BII and want to know how on a 12C?

Hi, Don;

the HP12C has no ALPHA capabilities. in order to enter a math expression/formula, it must be first generated an RPN-like keystroke sequence prior to program it (or, if you are able to, key in the keystroke sequence directly in program mode). In the HP17B you can use variable names and have these names as menu keys. In the HP12C, each variable should be stored in a numbered register. The HP12C is not able to solve generical expressions (programs) as you can do with the HP17B/BII.

If you actually need to use the HP12C, please post an additional message with the expression(s) you want to enter in the HP12C and let us (I and the other contributors) try to generate a program, if applicable.

Best regards.

Luiz (Brazil)

Hi Don,

If you started out with the 17bii, and now have a 12c, you will feel like you are going backwards. The 17bii is much more versatile and powerful.

In my opinion, the programming on the 12c is almost useless--you cannot edit a program. If you make a mistake, you have to play silly tricks with GTO jumps, or erase and start over!

With "Let" and "Get", as well as "If" with AND OR XOR etc, you can do a whole lot in the solver on the 17bii.

I had an 11c years ago, and always assumed that the 12c would be similar in programming. Not So! The 12c has a very restricted programming feature, compared to its scientific cousin.

But there are some great things about the 12c---and some here have written some really neat stuff for them--even taken advantage of the TVM solver as a general solver----but in reality this is sort of arcane stuff, and I find that the machine is a relic......but I still own a couple! (They are great for non-programmed straight financial stuff).

Regards,

Bill
