Memory Failure
Message #1 Posted by Ed Look on 25 Oct 2004, 8:49 p.m.

Sorry, didn't mean to scare anyone; I meant my noggin, not any calculator.

I have forgotten: what was included in the package the HP39G (no +) came in? Was there a connectivity cable?

IMHO there had been different packages, those w/o and later _with_ cable and SW. At least my HP-40G was with everything at the same price as formerly the bare calculator, IIRC.

I don't believe Hp supplied a cable with the Hp39G (as it had IR, and they were CHEAP!!!!). Later they may have provided a cable, but the early released Hp39G had nothing but a book and batteries. The Hp 40G came with a cable.

It is unfortunate that Hp did not provide any cable with the Hp39G and more or less figured one geek would buy and then share with the rest of the class via IR. What really happened was a geek would buy an HP49G and pass on the Hp39G. Anyone dumb enough to buy a 39G was left in the cold for support as a geek would have a 49G and not share his cable (would you trust your only cable to an obvious unknowledgable user). And usually this same customer actually just bought a Ti anyway.

Just my ranting AGAIN.

Gee, why doesn't HP just listen to me? I could solve all of these problems. .. 8^)

Ron, would a 49G cable do?

Though, I wonder if I should pursue this anymore, as when my son gets to high school (still a few years off), I think I'll spring RPN on him.

The only reason why I got this one, the 39G, for him was that it was cheap as you said, it was algebraic, since he's really barely out of grade school, and it's HP. Yeah, yeah, I've read all the rants on this forum and on the 48 newsgroup; it's a loyalty out of memory...memories of how a versatile, rugged, and powerful 34C rescued me from hours of drudgery by its power from the keyboard and program memory. I myself started out with a TI algebraic until it bit the dust (only a year or so of use!!!) from wear. After discovering RPN... well, there's no turning back! At least his 39G will last much more than the year+ that my TI SR-40 lasted.

The cables are the same

Yes, the cable for the 49G is the same cable for the 39/40G. In fact there is an adapter plug that should have come with the 49G so that the cable will also work for the 48G also.
