Connecting HP48G, G+ to Win XP
Message #1 Posted by Ed Look on 20 Oct 2004, 11:51 p.m.

I noticed www.hp.com does not have a connectivity kit that'll work with Win XP.

Would the software for Win 2000, Me, 98, and 95 work in XP's "Compatibility Modes" with these older operating systems?

I haven't had the need to hook my 48Gs to a computer since I last had an oldie with Win 98 on it.

Hi,

since W2K and WXP are similar in many respects,
many programs for W2K will run under WXP, too.
If a prog won't run directly, the suitable
compatibility mode should help in most cases.

However, there's absolutely no need for the connectivity kit
as long as you have a prog that's capable of KERMIT or XMODEM protocols,
and the cable, of course;-)

I tried to install HPCOMM 3 on my winXP yesterday (service pack 2) and i cannot install it at all. SETUP.EXE is doing nothing at all. Even with compatibility with win98 check box...

Michel,

I, following Randy's advice, installed HPCOMM version 3.0r4 in my Win XP system and it works flawlessly. Check to see if you have this or a newer (if such exists anymore!) version. Perhaps you have an older version?

In fact, it works much better than Conn4x for my 49G+. Now, if there's a better replacement (like HPCOMM) for the 49G+, that'd be great.

I hope that you're using the latest version of Conn4x (currently Version 2.2 Build 2353), which is much improved over the version on the CD-ROM; it allows "text" transfers (similar to Kermit "ASCII" transfers) and remote operation of the calculator for a start.

The latest Conn4x should be available here, and the latest HPComm here.

But note that Conn4x translations differ from Kermit translations for NUL, literal ", and \. Conn4x may also have a problem with these characters outside of a quote-delimited character string. For transfers from the calculator, <CR><LF> pairs are also different (better).

Note that the MMC/SD card on the 49g+ allows very fast transfers. If you want Kermit ASCII compatible transfers via the card, see my programs at http://www.hpcalc.org/details.php?id=6017.

Conn4x also works with the 48G series for Xmodem binary transfers, and with the addition of the included Xmodem server library to the calculator, can do the text transfers and the rest as well.

Regards,
James
