HP-97 flex cable replacement
Message #1 Posted by Michel on 27 Sept 2004, 8:29 p.m.

The flex 13 contacts cable between the main board and the card reader of my HP-97 is completely destroy; unusable safely and cause bad contact and even short circuit. Where can i find a replacement cable in modern electronic.

Do you think it's a good idea to hard-wire the 2 boards with hard drive wire (40 contacts but i can remove all extra one with a knife).

Thanks again! Michel

Suitible replacements for the flex cable are very difficult to find. In the past I have just unsoldered the connectors on the CPU board and reader board and then hard wired the connections with individual pieces of stranded wire.

What I did in my 97 was to use a piece of 26 way IDC ribbon cable fitted with the normal IDC sockets at each end (like an IDE cable, but only 26 way). Don't forget to feed it through the chassis plate before fitting the second socket :-).

I then soldered 13 pin right-angle headers to the logic and card reader PCBs. You have to fiddle things a bit since you have to use the same row of holes in each socket, IIRC the card reader end (where there's more headroom) is actually a 26 pin header with the bottom row of PCB pins cut off, and I used the row of holes in each connector nearest the top of the calculator in each case.

Works fine, and I can easily remove the logic board or card reader for repairs.
