HP49G+ vs HP49G
Message #1 Posted by RMSe17 on 23 Sept 2004, 11:11 p.m.

Is there a comprehensive side by side comparison chart? Or a link to a good comparison of abilites and differences? I am interested in features, hardware components (like what processor is used?) etc..

Please visit www.hpcalc.org , and read the newsgroup comp.sys.hp48 .

The two above are *the* sources for information on the HP-48 and HP49x series calculators.

BTW: If you don't have neither the 49G nor the 49g+,
just forget about the 49G, which is simply trash IMHO.
The 49g+ is far superior to the 49G in *every* aspect.

Faster, better display, much better keys, much nicer look (no frozen hamster butt),
expandability (SD cards), more programming options (ARM core access), and more...

I'm not so sure about the keyboard. I don't like the feel of the rubbery keyboard on the 49G and it occasionally misses keystrokes, but the 49g+ misses a lot more keystrokes, and already there have been numerous reports of broken key hinges.

But in other ways, yes, the 49g+ is superior.

James

Hi James,

That's why I don't use either of them;-)
My favourite in this class is my HP-48G+ Turbo,
with the high contrast display, a reliable keyboard,
with a real ENTER bar, speedup,
,and more RAM than needed...

Raymond

HP49G+ is an upgrade of the HP49G:

* A SD Card Port * Faster Processor (I'm not sure what MHZ) * Price $139 as opposed to $189.

The big con, the keyboard can be a problem, but I hear that HP has fixed the keyboards.

Perhaps, but I'll believe it when I see it. My second warranty replacement 49g+ has a package serial of CNA423xxxxx,, case serial CNA419xxxxx, and ROM serial CN420xxxxx, and still misses keystrokes if I type normally. That said, if I'm careful to "bottom out" the keys every time, it does register all keystrokes, so I think that a lot of the problems depend on the user's typing style.

Whether they've fixed the problem with key hinges breaking will probably take a few months to tell.

But if you want to read discussions about RPL calculators, you'll find a lot more information in the usenet group comp.sys.hp48.

James
