HP 41 EPROMs Modules
Message #1 Posted by Johannes Mueller on 29 Aug 2004, 4:39 p.m.

Does anybody know how to burn self-written HP41 programs onto an EPROM module? I remember that 20 years ago there were several companies where you could send a cassette with your programs and got them back on a module. Does anybody still offer this service today? Thanks for your help!

Well, I don´t think that there are any persons left who can programm your EPROM module. I also think, there are no more EPROM module on stock anywhere. If you have a EPROM reader, ask Emmanuel Compes for help. He is our master of "standard" EPROMs. Second possibility is to programm your software into either a ZEPROM (the module itself is rare and expensive) or a podern Clonix (look in the archive, there were a lot of topics about these modules in the last 6 month)

Hi Johannes,

I sent an eMail message to you last evening regarding your post. Contrary to popular belief there are people, me for one, who can still program EPROM's for the HP41 -and- EPROM's do still exist and can be purchased for a nominal cost. If anyone needs or wants EPROM's burned with HP41 FOCAL or MCODE images I'd be most happy to accomodate. My service is free (in small quantities). EPROM's and shipping at actual cost with no handling fee.

Best, Wilson

Dear Wilson, dear Johannes,

thanks for your response about programming Eprom´s for HP-41. I offer burning support for Zeprom (16K Eproms from Zengrange, housed inside a plug in module shell)...

Regards from Germany - Christoph Klug

I didn´t speak about EPROMS for an external EPROM box, I spoke about EPROM modules, that can be plugged into a module slot like a real module. Can you also programm them?

I suggest you het yourself a Clonix or MLDL2000 (available soon now).

I agree!! The Clonix and/or NoVRAM’s are viable alternatives to the EPROM; both are ‘FANTASTIC’ products that are currently available. I cannot yet speak of the MLDL2000 but I'm confident it will be another great alternative as well.

However, some HP41 fans still own, and wish to continue using, working external EPROM boxes and/or card reader case type EPROM boxes such as the HHP Portable EPROM. I offer my EPROM burning services to those few existing HP41 aficionados that fit in this category. Hopefully I can help extend the life of a few of the remaining EPROM boxes in doing so.

Best Regards to all, Wilson

I own one of these HHP 32K EPROM boxes. I also purchased an EPROM burner to burn my own. Is there a specific procedure that you need to follow to prepare and burn the EPROM set? Jeff

Jeff,

The procedure you need to follow is dependent on the type of burning hardware and the size (capacity) of the EPROM's. You'll likely need the manual that should have come with the burner. I know of one manual that is currently available for download (on the other site). It's the manual that comes with the Mountain Computer HP-41/HP-IL based EPROM burner. You'll also lilely need the personality modules for the burner, some temporary means to store the module image (i.e., ProtoCoder or MLDL) during the burn process, and the software to drive it all.

I hope this all helps a bit. The full answer to your question requires far too much detail to cover on the forum.

Best, Wilson

Jeff,

Oops, I forgot to mention... You should have a good UV EPROM eraser on hand. Although EPROM's are rather inexpensive you can go through a lot of chips in a hurry when first learning the process. A good UV eraser can easily pay for itself in short order.

Best, Wilson
