Fry's has HP49G+ for $109.99

According to Fry's ad in today's L.A.Times, they are asking $109.99 for the HP 49G+.

Their web site (outpost.com) lists a price of $139.99.

Here in Argentina, after customs, taxes, etc. a 49G+ is advertised at 1200 pesos, equivalent to U$S 400, which is about 1.3 times the average monthly salary in the country...

Here in Brasil is not much different from Argentina (The difference is only when we discuss soccer.. ;) ). In ibazar.com.br(ebay affiliated). We can find a 49G+ for R$ 790,00 (USD 260,00). 3 times the legal less montly salary. What a shame!

because of some aspects we´d need a lot of time to expose and talk about (not the scope here), some top-tech "wonders" are considered luxury by some governors and politicians... Oops! Time to cut the line out.

First, you have the "real" costs: FOB price in origin, freight, insurance, etc.

Then, you pay import duties over all the items abovementioned.

Then you pay extra taxes such as "fee for statistics", etc.

Then you pay "Importation VAT" (In Argentina is ~ 30%) over all the abovementioned

Then there are the "importation agent fees" and the importer markup

Then there is the retailer markup

Then there is "sales VAT" and "gross income tax" for the retailer

And, of course, because of all these charges, the volume will be very low, so there are no scale benefits in any stage of the chain. Warranty costs, support, etc., will be beared by very few units so... make the markup a little larger, please!

But all politicians here keep complaining against imported goods which are "so cheap" that prevent the local industry to thrieve.

And, if you need to send a product back to the country of origin (warranty replacement), many of the charges will appear again when exporting the defective unit or when importing the replacement one.

I'm from argentine too, and i'm the happy owner of an 49g+. I bought one over deremate.com(an ebay-like for southamerica) for 240$us.. =(. The guy "export" them from brazil. CN402 and a good keyboard. I call first HP when i decided that my 48gx wasn't enought, and they told me 1300pesos first... nobody will ever buy a calc at that price!
