How to remove permanent marker from calculator?
Message #1 Posted by Mike Tjebben on 26 July 2004, 9:13 p.m.

I just purchased an HP48 from a colleague, but it has the colleague's name in permanent black marker on the back of the case. Is there a "safe" (to the caculator, of course) way to remove the marking?

There is also permanent black marking on the fabric case too, but I'm not as concerned about that. If, however, someone has a clever idea about how to remove that too, I'd be happy to hear.

I did a few searches on this site, using keywords "marker", "permanent", etc., but without success.

Many thanks.

A permanent marker or Sharpie can usually be removed with Alcohol or believe it or not Hairspray. But be sure to test it on a small corner to make sure it does not discolor the case too much. Also since the 48's case is textured, it might be difficult to completely remove all of the ink.

Regards,

Steve

The isopropyl alcohol worked great! On BOTH the calculator AND the fabric case!

Thank you to all who gave suggestions.

Here in the UK you can buy a range of products called "Stain Devil" that remove all sorts of things (you buy a different bottle according to the type of stain.)

There's one for ink that I've used these to remove biro and permanent marker from different plastics without any ill-effect to the plastic.

So try this but don't forget to test on an inconspicuous area first just in case.

I have had pretty good luck using white gas (camping fuel/cigarette lighter fluid).

A bit more agressive thing to try is a product called "Oops!" It is a mixture of several solvents. It seems the best one for markers evaporates the fastest so it can help to wet your rag frequently in a dry area and keep going at it. Keep all solvents off of the keyboard area as they can leave behind "water" marks.
