Calc won't run on batteries
Message #1 Posted by David Ramsey on 30 June 2004, 6:34 p.m.

Well, I finally snagged a "red dot". It's easily the most beat-up calc in my collection-- apparently it was stored in a working rock tumbler-- but I knew what it was like when I bid on it.

The calc has obviously been opened and it appears as though a bank of LEDs has been replaced (slight brightness and position differences).

The calc works perfectly on AC but not at all on batteries. The battery contacts are the cleanest, nicest part of the calc.

I will be disassembling the calc to clean and polish it; is there anything I should look for other than obvious broken connections re the not running on batteries thing?

Either the battery is dead or it's the bridging clip where the charger plugs in. Looking at the back of the calc with the charger port at the top, the left pin is the battery, the center is common and the right is the supply to the calc. With no charger, the bridging clip has to connect the left pin to the right pin for the unit to operate from battery supply. Either it is: 1) Missing 2) Corroded or 3) Bent out of shape.

Yeah, that was probably it. This is a very early calc without the newer style bridging clip that has a "slot" to help locate it. I'll make sure it's positioned correctly when I reassemble the unit.

Another problem could be the battery contacts. They toch the pack along the SIDES of the tips of the battery contacts. I have seen several machines with invisible corrosion there that prevents proper contact to the pack. BTW, Ron Grant says hi.

It was the "shorting" contacts in the AC adapter socket on the calc. And tell Ron I'll be sending him some stuff soon...
