A new set of TTF files is about to come...
Message #1 Posted by Vieira, Luiz C. (Brazil) on 16 May 2004, 1:47 a.m.

Hello, all;

I'm sure that any TTF that replicates LCD and keyface characters is handy to those who want to enhance documents related to electronic devices, mostly calculators. In our particular case, HP calculators.

The good news is that a limitation that does not allow characters to be added to some specific codes (a Windows® limitation?) has been surpassed and I'll reorganize all fonts I draw so these codes will be filled with their correct characters. Almost all fonts I announced and allowed to be downloaded need to be reorganized, and I think only the HP41, Voyagers and the General LCD fonts will be kept "as is". This is because their characters actually don't use these codes, if I am not wrong.

As soon as I have the new fonts I'm posting about them and where to download them from.

Cheers.

Hi, all;

as I mentioned, here are the first two TTF files of the new set.

HP71B Character Set TTF (this one is particularly dedicated to Gordon Dyer d8^)

HP82143A Character Set TTF

Please, let me remind those who have already installed the HP82143A earlier TTF file that this earlier version must be removed prior to install the new one. Also, many characters have new positions so if you have used the earlier 82143A character set TTF with some documents and you added characters with codes from 160 and above, please reorganize the documents so the characters match their new positions, now from 128 and above. The new TTF files are set so in order to fill the gaps between character groups it had before. I'd like you to inspect the new character organization with any font viewer prior to change your documents.

Also, if any PDF has been generated with the earlier 82143A Character Set, please check if it is unchanged. If the Embedded Fonts list was active and the 82143A Character Set was in the list when the documents were created, then these documents will keep their original character set, meaning they need no change.

Please, let me know as you have tested them. And just wait for a while because others, reviewd and brand-new ones, are coming soon...

Cheers.

HP-42S font with internal ASCII codes? (was: HP71B and HP82143A new TTF)

Do you intend to create a HP-42S font with exactly the same ASCII codes as the ones used internally within the calc? (This could for example be useful in conjunction with Emu42)

Hello, Erik;

In fact, I will reorganize the exisitng HP42 Character Set TTF to match the original mapping, but I guess taht at least three TTF will be needed:

- one that exactly matches the internal so you can use it with the emulator; this is particularly dangerous to some word processors because some "active" characters will be defined with control codes, like line feed and carriage right (10dec and 13dec, if I am not wrong);
- another one using ASCII predefined positions after code 32dec that's suitable for printing documents based in word processors like MS Word® and others;
- and a third one that follows the IR output remapping with inprt and modified inprt.

Anyway, I'd like to know what you all guys suggest for this particular HP42S font. All characters are already drawn and all I need to do is changing places and set new codes for the existing characters. I just need guidance.

I'm looking forward to hear form you.

Thank you, Erik, for your comments.

Cheers.

Hmm... on the other side it is convenient to have a consistent mapping between the fonts. Then it would be possible to change between fonts easily (e.g. within a word processor) without having to adjust the special characters.

If I had to choose only one format, I would therefore vote for a format that is word processor friendly. Because you would most likely want to be able to edit files within a word processor (e.g. MS Word) at some point... A small user tool could be written in addition to the fonts to convert to this single format from both HP-42S internal and INPRT formats. So one common format might not be that much of a limitation after all...
