Nonpareil on Windows!
Message #1 Posted by Eric Smith on 26 Apr 2004, 5:58 p.m.

I've now got Nonpareil running on Windows, cross-compiled from Linux. It's not yet ready for release, but it shouldn't take too much longer. My friend Dan is going to work on an installer script for me using the Nullsoft installer NSIS. I've been able to build NSIS to run on Linux, so I'll be able to just say something like "make windows" and have a ready-to-distribute Nonpareil installer pop out automatically.

On Windows, Nonpareil requires the GTK+ 2.2.4 runtime to be installed. Fortunately there is a nice easy-to-use installer from Alex Shaduri. In fact, that's where I learned about NSIS. Eventually I'll include the GTK+ runtime in the Nonpareil installer.

Since I'm going to sell the Windows version rather than give it away, I'll do my own scans. Dave Hicks has graciously allowed me to use his photos for the free Linux version, but I don't think it would be fair to use them commercially.

I'll put together a no-cost crippleware/nagware demo version that only simulates one or two models, is not customizable, and at startup and every few minutes puts up a dialog asking the user to buy the real thing. Of course, potential customers could switch to Linux and not have to pay me anything, but I wouldn't mind that. In fact, I think I'd prefer it. But I doubt that many people will switch just so they can run Nonpareil.
