HP-41 Clonix Low Power module clarification.
Message #1 Posted by Diego Diaz on 6 Feb 2004, 6:29 p.m.

Hi all,

I'm *really* happy to be back (mainly because it means that I've cope with some personal problems.) Thanks to all of you that have mailed me for you interest and comprehension.

And to the Clonix-41 customers for their patience with the shipment delays.

I've received a pair of mails with similar questions in this last days. They asked about the overall Power reduction of the Low Power (Silver label) Clonix, and the differences with (Golden label) Standard Clonix.

I'll try my best to clarify:

The lowest power consumption it achieved by a Standard Clonix running at "Turbo" speed.

The (so called) Low Power Clonix is intended for those users (they are a big number) that don't have a "Turbo" HP-41, and wish to save some battery life... (who doesn't?..;-)

This might look paradoxical but it's explained due to the fact that Clonix module *only* draws current from the power supply while in RUNning mode.

The HP-41 Suppy voltage is fairly stable, say 6.4v

A Standard Clonix draws about 13.5mA when RUNning

As for an instruction period of:

56 * (1 / 360E3) = 155.55 µs

at standard 41 clock of 360KHz.

The power consumption/instruction will be:

13.5E-3 * 6.4 * 155.55E-6 = 13.43 µW/instruction

with a 610KHz (1.7x) Turbo-ed 41 the result is as follows:

Instruction period:

56 * (1 / 610E3) = 91.80 µs

Power consumption / instruction:

13.5E-3 * 6.4 * 91.80E-6 = 7.93 µW/instruction

The Low Power Clonix can only work on 1x (360KHz) machines and it draws about 9mA; so its Power consumption / instruction figures will be:

9E-3 * 6.4 * 155.55E-6 = 8.96 µW/instruction.

With these figures it's obvious that the most convenient Clonix for you depends on the speed of the HP-41 you're planning to plug your Clonix at.

Choose wisely.

Best wishes.

Diego Diaz.

P.S. You can see a (really wise) Standard Clonix user Config for a 2x *loaded* HP-41CV, and a nice picture of it at: http://www.iespana.es/clonix-41/users.htm

P.S.2 For those courious :-)... proto of the NoVRAM PCB layout: http://www.iespana.es/clonix-41/novram.htm
