Which calculator
Message #1 Posted by eliztest on 17 Jan 2004, 9:11 p.m.

I am relativley new to hp calculators. I have owned an hp48sx for about 1 year. With the introduction of the new hp calcultors I have considered buying a new one. I won't buy a hp49g+ until they work out all the bugs, but I am considering a hp48II. Should I buy this calulator or an older hp model? I will probably be majoring in engineering.

If you really like the 48, and want something the same, then you should get an old one... definitely. However, by no means should you buy a 48gii. The main problem with them is that there is no way to upload new ROMs... consequently, all the problems that are there now will be there forever (I believe that is right)

The 49g+ is not a bad calculator. It is not at the same level as some (many?) of the classics. Personally I like it because it suits my occasional use (and I got it free), but some (many?) people dislike it. Don't buy it expecting to have a calculator that competes with the 41, rather, the TI-89 and likes. It is more powerful (Can solve more problems) and is considerably faster than the TI-89 (it also weighs considerably less)

A few thoughts. -Ben
