I suspect that is what is up for auction, a calculator that was modified to be usable by a blind person. That is what I could find on Google. There were references to Thomas Benham, a blind professor at Haverford College.

My guess, based on its age, is that they decoded the LED display signals and used them to drive some sort of braille device.
