HP-41 Unit Management System
Message #1 Posted by Angel Martin on 13 Sept 2003, 3:29 a.m.

Here's an entry in the nostalgia department - though fun!

I'm currently working on an extended Unit Managemenr System ROM (UMS) for the 41, based on the implementation made on standard modules like the THERMAL, MACHINE, or PETROLEUM packs.

My goal is to also add electrical units, obviously missing on these above.

I started reverse-engineering the MCODE listings for the "SI-" function, but was wondering if someone has information on how this UMS was designed and implemented, so I can get a boost start with the project.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Also, if the interest is there, we could have it available on line once finished.

If I may help, let me know. What I could do is an MCode-trace for one or two calls (loops reduced).

I take you up on that. Can you e-mail me the results? SI- is my favorite, have you got the THERMAL rom?

What I'm after specifically is how they implemented the look-up table for the allowed units, as well as how they wrote the dimension-checking algorithm.

It might be a tall order, but no pain no growth..

Thanks, AM

I'm currently sick at home, ASAP I have access to the IBM host I do send all about what I may extract from the THERMAL.

Also, please look at the functions that were available with the AECROM by Redshift Software. It had features like display the X register in Feet or inches. For example, 6.5 in the X register displays as 78 when in the Inches Mode, but only with the AECROM installed. The display defaults to regular mode if the AECROM is removed.

I sold the ROM, but I have a scan of the manual, if a copy would help, drop me an e-mail. (Caution: PDF File sizes are approximately 1 MB + 1 MB + 3 MB = 5 MB Total)

Yes I am interested in that manual. But I do all my eMails with a HP200LX and a 33.8k modem, so 5MB are a heavy load. Well, let's try. My address you find here http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/NutEm/nutem.htm#re

Hi Chris,

Thanks for the input. I'd also appreciate getting a copy of the scanned manual, I'm sure it will help me understand how does the feature work.

Thanks, ÁM.
