Why did HP stop building the HP 15 and 16c?
Message #1 Posted by Joe Edwards on 4 Sept 2003, 6:07 p.m.

I was just looking thru HP's website and I see the sell the 12c. Can anyone explain to me what they stopped making the 15c and the 16c? It seems that the 15c would still have a great deal of value...its size and capabilities outweigh the size of my TI-83+ I have to use in class. I would much rather pull out a small calculator like the 15c for quick number crunching, but I don't want all the financial calculations as I still need the scientific calculations.

Thanks.

Joe

It's like anything else that is a perfect product. It's good, it's in demand, it's useful, therefore it must be discontinued?

I remember someone saying that about the Volksvagen "beetle" original edition! And they stop produce it too. Today the vast majority of drivers won't buy a volks "bug" even if they were still produce; they prefer Honda Civic or a Hyundai Santa Feeee!

Not enought scientists and eng. to buy these tools but enought businessman, bankers and students for the 12C!

There is no doubt in my mind, that if HP started selling the original HP-15C, that it would be one of the most popular calculators of all time. It would sell far better than any of HP's current calculators. The 10 series is the only shirt pocket calculator, that HP has ever made. That makes it a strong seller.

If you walk through most engineering departments, you will see the 15C or 41 used more than just about any other calculator.

The 15C is still heavily used, hence it's high costs. I had a friend that had his 15C stolen on a business trip. I gave him a brand new 48GX, for free, and he asked if I could get him a 15C. He much preferred the 15C.
