due to the place where I live (Australia) how can I successfully and safely purchase a used HP calculator?

I regularly see calculators for sale from Australia on eBay. Some here would argue that eBay does not qualify for your "safe" condition, and they would be right. It is not safe, not like buying from a reputable electronics chain. However, electonics chain stores don't carry the kinds of HP calculators I think you mean (i.e., not 9s, 9g, etc). Moreover, I have made some 60+ transactions so far on eBay, the most expensive being $340, and I have had mostly good experiences and no outright bad ones (like non-receipt of the merchandise).
Of course, the items on eBay don't have to be from Australia for you to buy them, either. :-)
