The splash screen has no real purpose. It's only a banner for the 'MDG MetaKernel', MDG meaning 'Maubert Development Group', AFAIK.
Since you see the splash screen, this means your machine does a warmstart. After a normal off-on cycle you don't see the splash.
Make sure you don't have a strange STARTUP program, which could set your contrast.
If you don't have valuable data in your machine,
you could do a reset, pressing ON+A+F, then the NO softkey.

You should also check your installed ROM version.
The current version is 1.97 (beta) or alike, but nearly all machines were shipped with older, unstable versions.
If you have such an older version, you should urgently upgrade to the latest one.

If that isn't the cause, you could check if your calc is still under warranty. If yes, just return the thing to your dealer.
After all, it's just a 49G (sorry;-)
