48GX /SX
Message #1 Posted by Andrey on 14 Aug 2003, 3:28 a.m.

The 48 doesn't get too much posting on this site, but I'm sure there are big 48 experts out there. Can anyone clue this clueless guy in on the various SX/gx versions (Singapore, US, etc made) and the screen question? Is the higher contrast new screen really so much better? Or does it come at the cost of corner cutting somewhere else in the production specs? What are the known problems with 48 ? Thanks for any tips and advice.

S and SX's were made in both USA and Singapore (molded keys).

G and GX's were made originally made in Singapore (molded keys).

G,GX and G+ were then made in Indonesia (painted keys).

The GX finished up in China (painted keys).

Yes, the black on gray screen is that much better, but at the cost of Chinese unit. The printing of the keys and bezel is not as sharp as on earlier units, but worth the trade off IMO.

There are no other changes in manufacturing for the black on gray units.

Yeah-

I've heard rumors of the early 48sx with a black LCD. Neither of mine have it. Shame, as I prefer the SX over the GX in most particulars.

I do have one GX with the black screen and the screen is really amazingly better. It's visible in all sorts of work situations where the older screen isn't.

I occasionally consider carrying a 48GX with black screen instead of my trusty 32k 42s. then I turn the 42s on and say.. "naaaaah" (though the calendaring on the 48 would allow me to never have to carry anything else)

Hi folks;

Just to add a few comments of my own about the HP48G/S. I'm not an HP48 expert user (no SYS RPL neither Assembly knowledge), but for me, the best additional features that the HP48G has are related to data input/output and the equation library itself. The 3D addition is somehow important, but I believe a faster processor and a bigger, higher resolution display would be of help in this case.

The new features (new commands) are listed in Section E of the HP48G AURM.

Best regards.

Luiz (Brazil)
