just don't buy one
Message #1 Posted by bill platt on 13 Aug 2003, 10:04 a.m.

So, here is a proposal regarding the 33s: just hold your breath and let them sit. The overwhelming response here to the keyboard is: OOOOOOGLy! and dIsTRacTInG.

So, IF it comes out with that Whacky keyboard, then LET IT GO! Then, they'll re-tool, and we can give Compaq the money once they give us the product we deserve.

OR: HEY COMPAQ-HP! ARE YOU LISTENING! We want a REAL KEYBOARD!

So, hopefully someone at HP (Mr. Valdez, you are a real person----can you sway this in our favor?) will read these posts and see what the problem is.

You guys here are SO missing the point.

Old farts like us-- collectors and engineers-- are NOT THE TARGET MARKET for the 33s.

High school and college students are. And they will buy it because it looks cool. Really-- admit it to yourself, even if there are serious usability compromises inherent in the keyboard design, it looks damn cool...just like all those weird-ass cell phones that are selling like hotcakes now.

OK, so the next model should have fake diamonds like the chinese-made cell phones that sell like hotcakes in China.

After all 2 billion people can't be wrong.

Somewhere in Earth, in the Old-Fashioned-Engineer's room:

"Uhh Dad, in this calc REALLY haven't got mp3 player...!"

Do you actually think it looks cool? I must be getting old, and I only just turned 27...

Seriously, I think the design is unbalanced, with the calculator being too elongated and the 'midsection bulb' (between the 'mode keys') too dominant. That combined with the crowded keyboard and the vee-shaped keys making the allready busy keyboard even more busy, makes the calculator look cheap, I think.

Nah, I think the point is being missed all over again.

The new cell phones with the crazy keyboard layouts aren't selling because they have crazy keyboard layouts (I know people with them who hate the keyboards, but none who like them).

They are: cheap They are: color

yeah- the overall look is much better than the older phones. Sorta look like cheap knockoffs of the $400 multipupose phones. Oh, wait- that's what they are.

The 33s isn't going to sell well because it's got a keyboard tht looks like stacked female chalice symbols. It's going to sell well (if it does) because the display, capabilities, and interface (software).

I could be wrong, but I think the only people *really* turned on by this layoout are marketers. Show me one of those elementary or middle school math students in the contests that would pick this as an *upgrade* to his 32Sii.....
