Replacement for the 32s
Message #1 Posted by Matthew Jones on 4 July 2003, 3:39 a.m.

Hi folks; I'm an Australian currently doing my honours year research project in organic chemistry. Last year, after my final exams I left my 32s calculator in the bar at our campus and never saw it again. This year I've been using my dads old HP 35 in exams, but I really wish I still had my 32s. I spoke to a boffin in HPs development department a few months ago, and he assured me HP were working on a replacement for the 32s. Several of the calculator specialist shops here in my home town (Melbourne) tell me that this replacement model will be in their store late August, but noone knows much about it. This is what I've heard: named the 33s it will be a real calculator and not a childs toy, ie, it will have RPN entry logic and will offer features very similar to the 32s; but this is all heresay. Does anyone know more? The HP website makes no mention of an RPN replacement for the 32s. Cheers Matthew Jones.

We would all like HP to make a quality (hardware + software + manual) replacement RPN scientific it but I'll believe it when I see it.

HP's recent offerings have been a bit disappointing in different ways (HP6/9/12p/30/49?), but is it too much to expect new calculators that were as good as the oldies?

According to HP marketing the HP30 could be described as a 32s 'replacement' so I wouldn't put too much weight on marketing speak or trade talk until you see and feel the product.

Anyone out there doing beta testing - or will this be done by the customers!

32S nicer than 32Sii

Although many will disagree, I think the 32S is a nicer calculator than 32Sii. It has a cleaner and simpler layout, with a single shift button. The 32Sii looks cluttered.

So Mr. Jones, if U lost your 32S, think twice before you replace it with 32Sii, or yet another that they release later. HP has been taken over by mafia thugs and does not build what we want anymore. They are unlikely to start selling what U want. Their most recent offering, the HP-12CP (financial calculator for mafia thugs to add up their take) is designed so pathetic that they were too dumb to use reasonable color combinations, such as to choose ink that can be viewed under ordinary lighting conditions against a shiny aluminum back panel.

Based on everything you just said, my recommendation is that U get a used 32S off of eBay, and put it to work.
