CARD ERR from 41c reader
Message #1 Posted by Steve on 10 May 2003, 11:22 a.m.

I'm attempting to rebuild a 41c card reader. I've replaced the rubber wheel and tightened the motor clutch. I've checked the order of the wires, and used known good cards. When I write to a card it does not report an error, however when I try to read the same card (or a card written by another reader) I get CARD ERR. I know there are probably many reasons for this error, but what's the most likely cause? The reader is in pretty good shape so I was hoping to bring it back to life. Thanks,

Steve

Mine has been doing that a lot lately, and it is a pretty lightly used device with new rubber wheels.

If you look *really* closely, do you see hesitations in the movement of the card that seem a bit erratic and long?

I'm thinking I may have run into a ever so slightly uneven wheel. The only thing is, the first 2 dozen cards I wrote verified fine, and are still verifying fine sometimes. So It may be a cleaning need or---

I'd like to try a general check of attachment tightness and maye (help me out here, is this a good idea) head cleaning/demagnetizing.

AFTER I have time again, of course......

Hi;

I agree with Christof's precise warning about the irregularity when pulling the cards. Also, I had problems with both situations:

1- magnetic residual field, that can be "removed" with degausser devices like the ones used in "ancient" tape players/recorders. The card reader must be opened and the magnetic head must be accessible. This procedure was exhaustively discussed here about one year ago or more, and it's proven to be harmless.

2- head cleaning; I once had to use metal polisher so the head read/write surface was left like a mirror. After that, till today (about five years) it's running like hell, no errors at all.

Hope this adds a few more information.

Success!

One nasty little thing to look out for is the routing of the motor wires. Keep them well away from the head. Also, make sure the head is clean.
