48g+ or 48gx
Message #1 Posted by Joe Edwards on 3 Feb 2003, 2:12 p.m.

Hey guys, I noted earlier that my bookstore has two G+ models for sale...at $169.00 each. I talked to the manager and he sold one to me for $45.00. Was this a good deal, or should I have waited and gotten the GX model? Thanks in advance.

IMHO I think you got a great deal. The 48GX is still about $130+ and the G+ is about $100 if you can find them at all. With all of the power and memory of the stock GX, you can download all kinds of helpful programs, even without an extra memory card. Most users don't fully utilize it's capability anyway and I've never even KNOWN anyone who actually bought a memory card for it, outside of pre-programmed application cards.

At that price, the only question is, why not buy both of them ?

I would, but I went back to the store and the other one is gone now. The only thing left is a 48g for $30.00. It seems they updated the prices and cleaned up the back of the store.

Anyway, I started to play with it (ah RP input!) and was impressed with the construction. Better than the TI 83+ I have, but not as good as my old 32s (which I regret selling).

I am a bit concerned with the speed issue. It seems remarkedly SLOW compared to my TI 83+. Heck, it seems slow compared to the old 32s. Is this pretty much standard issue with the 48g/+/x models? The equation writer is great, but rather pokey as well. Any enlightenment would be helpful.

Sorry, I should have written "known personally". I normally use Excel and specialty software, etc for my work. I use a calculator for mostly quick calculations when away from my office. I don't need a 48GX, but it is a good calc so I carry it everywhere.

I used HP's (48GX's) during my PE licensure exams, but I still never personally met anyone who bought a memory card. I think that I would like one, but I have only seen them in a few places on the web and they are expensive. Any recommendation on which are best ?

Well, I spent more money in an original hp 128kb card, than in my GX :-(

Later, I bought a Klotz 1MB card for 40 euros :-)

They both work perfectly.

I think Klotz is the best choice. http://uuhome.de/oklotz/index_e.html

I too spent just about the same for a 128K card as I did for the calc. It is the HP memory card.

When researching this I came across a few items that said that these cards are different. Some didn't have the protective door over the contacts and HP recomended not to use these.

But like R Lion stated he has had no problems with the card he is using. The HP statement may have just been there way to avoid any problems with third party cards.

I have not heard any problems with the other cards that are available.

"Some didn't have the protective door over the contacts and HP recomended not to use these."

It doesn't matter if you only want to expand the memory, and you are not going to uninstall/install the cards many times(IMO).

You are exactly right and I soon relized this myself. I haven't removed my card yet. I think I might get one of the Klotz cards. That is a very good price compared to what HP wanted/wants. Are these even still available from HP? Well who cares anyway, there are too expensive.

Thanks for the link.
