Where can I find "N" cell batteries?
Message #1 Posted by Steve on 21 Jan 2003, 8:17 a.m.

It looks like Radio Shack is discontinuing their NiMH N cell battery. I also couldn't find them on the web (NiCAD Lady). It looks like N cells are going the way of HP calculators. I have a 41cx and I'm concerned that it may be difficult (if not impossible) in the future to find batteries for it. Has anyone found a reliable source? Thanks,

Steve

Here are some N sized NiCd batteries I know of:

  • Panasonic P-18N-FT
  • Sanyo Cadnica N-150N
  • Yuasa 150N
  • VARTA 150RS

To rebuild a battery pack:

  • Sanyo Cadnica N-50AAA

Note that I'm located in Europe. I don't know if these batteries are also available in the US, but perhaps the information helps you to find a supplier. I use the Sanyo Cadnica, and up to now, they work fine. I've heard that the Panasonic batteries sometimes leak.

I didn't found any N sized NiMH here in Europe. Does anyone know more about this?

Hi;

N-cells, mostly alkaline type, are still used in some toys and medical equipment. I'm confident they will not disappear so soon, we can even find some in supermarkets... Maybe the rechargeable ones are hard to be found, specially the NiMH. Also, there are altenatives: if you do not use card reader or optical wand or HPIL that much, chances are we can "build" a pack of smaller 1.5 V cells inside an original 41's batt holder without destroying it.

Cheers.

GP (www.gpbatteries.com.hk) also has N size NIMH - code GP50NH, rated at 500mah.

Do you know where to buy batteries from this manufacturer?

Hi Juergen, there is a NiMH cell called NH GP 28AAA-1Z (GP is the manufacturer) available at www.reichelt.de. The cell is specified with 280mAh and the size is called 2/3AAA. This cell has a N sized length but is a bit taller (10mm instead of 11.5mm) and it is equipped with solder tabs. Removing the tabs carefully is quite easy; At least I have done that. And it fits very good in my HP-41. Hope that helps.

Kind regards, Andreas

Andreas,

great news! Thank you much for this valuable information. Just one minor drawback: the company ships to Switzerland, but the minimal order value is EURO 50.-.

Unfortunately, I bought NiCd cells a month ago, and they are not very eco friendly. I guess I have to sell them and get some NiMH batteries.

Regards, Jürgen

Some cordless phone battery packs *seem* to use N nicad cells. There are many manufacturers and pack options (2,3 or 4 cells). May I suggest you take a battery of yours and compare to the cells in the packs. You'll have to disassemble it, but it is not a big trouble.

renato; if those n cells you are talking about are the ones in my sony cordless they are about the right legnth but a bit too fat. maybe with a bit of work.... try it and tell us. i looked and gave up

b.t.w.: way back in history, long long ago, in a galixy far far away, motorola used 3 n cells to power a tiny am transistor radio. i bet the owners of that radio were happy when the 41 came out.

Duracell make N type alkaline batteries. My HP-41CV is running on them now, so I know they're the right ones! I got mine from Maplins, and I've seen them in Dixons.

Try the Duracell website.

Cheapest place I have found alkaline "N" cells has been Home Depot. I hate going there because they always seem to stack bags of nasty smelling lawn chemicals and insectcides near the entry door. They also seem to only have one or two checkout stands open durung noon and evening rush... lines are needlessly long and slow.
