HP41 - PC Gateway & Emulator
Message #1 Posted by Christoph Klug on 7 Jan 2003, 6:13 a.m.

Realise : The HP41-PC Gateway & Emulator solution is the most surprising and really powerful application for the HP41 scene of last time. Use it for interfacing your HP41 handheld computer to PC, for data and program up/download, and for working with some virtual IL-Devices. EMU41 is the worlds leading HP41 emulator solution, which also gives you the advanced features of the real machine....

Jump below to the interesting HP-Museum forum message from Jean-Francois Garnier about “EMU41, a complete HP-IL system emulator” which was announced at December 2002 to the forum !

There you will find a link to the new EMU41 web page from Jean-Francois which gives you much details including some HP41 software routines for up/download of data, any type of files, NNN´s to/from PC world. Furthermore nice solutions exist for creating multi-column program prints and fast HP41 Barcode plots....

More details about the “HP41-PC Gateway & Emulator “ is placed now on the HP-Museum article forum and exist also on the www.hpcc.org web page : Follow the link to HP41 / HP41 Hardware Activities and Interfacing / HP41-PC Gateway & Emulator.

But now realise the surprising news about the worlds leading HP41 emulator solution – which includes the most advanced features of the real HP41, including plug in modules like CCD, HEPAX, and RAM-BOX.

Discover some new virtual IL-Devices like Video Screen, Printer, Floppy Disk Drive, Hard Disk Drive and DosLink (a powerful gateway to the PC world). Control this virtual IL-Devices with EMU41 or alternatively with your real HP41 handheld.

Furthermore EMU41 is able to control your real IL-Devices, for example reading measurement samples from the HP3468 IL-Digital Multimeter, or outputting data to the HP7470 IL-Plotter. Also the data and program exchange between HP41 and EMU41 now is absolutely easy by using the virtual Hard Disk Drive.

Owners of the HP82973 HP-IL/PC Interface Card now have the chance to replace their existing LINK PLUS or TRANS41 software packages by EMU41, because this acts as “all in one solution” and includes nice gateway and advanced emulator features.

For HP41 enthusiasts who want to start with HP41-PC interfacing, now the second generation rebuilt HP-IL/PC Interface Card is available....

I wish i could have one of these, but I do not own a motherboard with an ISA slot. is there any chance to make a pci device? or some other way to interface the HPIL with a modern computer?

I just bought the full version of EMU41 to support the HP82973A HPIL PC card. I already had a replica HPIL PC card by Christoph Klug, but hardly ever used it. Recently I discovered the Omnibook 800CT to be very compact Notebook including an ISA docking station. This notebook will now serve for my HP calcs hobby. Tonight for the first time I tried the new EMU41 with the HPIL PC card installed in the doskcing station. And wow it works!!! I was amazed when I could DIR a CASSETTE DRIVE TAPE connected externally to the OB800CT :) The notebook specs are: 166MHz / 80 MB RAM / 4 GB HDD / WIN98SE. Now the HP41 world has really melted together with the world of PCs. Many thanks to you both Jean-Francois Garnier and Christoph Klug for your endless efforts. I just can't wait to connect my IL2000 System by Christoph Klug together with my HP3421A and HP3468A to the PC in order to complete my hobby electronics lab. Again I'm totally amazed...

Very nice ... but what I really would like to have is an HP-41 emulator (with HP-IL support) running on HP-48 (connected to PC via RS-232) :-)

PCs for the HP-IL/PC Interface Card and EMU41 :

I use the HP-IL/PC Interface Card and the new full version of EMU41 in the following different PC systems. Furthermore I use this systems also for hardware function tests of the HP-IL/PC Interface Card and for testing some beta software versions of EMU41 and for evaluating the HP41-PC transfer software.

286/16MHz PC. This is my "nostalgic" DOS machine. Now I use it only for HP-41 applications. Operating system is DOS6.2. Software packages are LINK Plus, TRANS41 and EMU41. The floppy drive of this machine is also compatible to LIF-Disks for exchange with the HP9114 IL-Disk Drive.

Highscreen 386DX33 Laptop PC with ISA-Bus docking station. This is my mobile system. Display is only monochrome. Operating system WIN3.11. Software packages TRANS41 and EMU41.

1GHz Athlon PC with ASUS K7M motherboard with includes also one ISA-Bus slot. Operating system WIN98SE. This is my advanced multimedia system for office applications, audio applications (playing virtual digital piano and pipe organ), Video DVD player, and last not least HP41 applications with TRANS41, EMU41 and V41.

800MHz HP Vectra PC with ISA-Bus extension board. This is my actual office PC. Operating system WIN2000. For addressing the HP-IL/PC Interface card I use the user port software tool tested by Leo Duran.

This four samples will give you an imagination about the installation of the nice HP-IL/PC Interface Card to your own machine. Follow the idea of Jean-Francois Garnier and re-activate some old PC hardware which exist under your workbench or in your neighbours garage....

Best wishes from Germany - Christoph Klug
