I had asked the same question in the MoHPC Forum (what serial # marks the changeover?), but got no responses.
FWIW, I have two "old-style" HP-34C's, the more recent one with a S/N 2110S32559. I also have a "newer" style with a S/N 2225S31419. So, somewhere in that 67-week period spanning March 1981 to June 1982, the changeover in production methods occurred.
One can identify the newer units by their lighter weight (no metal backing plate) and easier keyboard action (resulting from redesigned snap rings). This is fairly well documented in the MoHPC under the
HP-34C
