HP-42X: HP-42S MicroCode Emulator for HP-48GX (Preliminary Info)
Message #1 Posted by Erik Ehrling on 30 Aug 2002, 5:10 p.m.

I have with much delight followed the HP-42X thread - this is indeed a breakthrough! Not only does it give us the possibility to emulate the HP42S on a HP48GX, it also gives us the first true HP42S emulator in the PC!

When can we expect it to arrive? Sometime this autumn? Will there be a Beta-release with further upgrades for all of us that cannot wait for the 1.0-version?

Personally I would prefer to see just a plain emulator with as few extras as possible. (OK being able to load/save HP42S programs/data to the HP48-stack would be a nice add-on... but definitely not necessary in the first version)

Also, would it be possible to cram it all onto a 128K ROM card? I.e. storing the HP-42 ROM (64K) + Emulator ROM (64K) on the ROM Card and use the Port 0 for 32K Emulator RAM + 8K HP-42 RAM!?

Surely such a ROM card would also be much easier to sell than a program that requires a HP48GX with two RAM cards... and if the ROM card was sold with a HP42S overlay it would be even better. (Maybe a HP42S emulator on a 128K ROM card + overlay for the HP48GX is the calculator-nirvana all of us HP42S fans have been waiting for???)

Am I just dreaming or would all this be possible?

Best regards, Erik Ehrling

I hope so :-)

No, it will be the final version.

I think that some kind of data/program saving/loading possibility would be implemented.

I am working on this. BTW HP-42X RAM is 96K, not 8K! And there will be further 31K of independent port memory for data/programs!

Best regards.

Keep up the good work... we are all very impressed by what we have seen so far...
