speeding up an HP41CX
Message #1 Posted by Theo Kastrissios on 26 July 2002, 11:15 p.m.

Can anyone tell me if speeding up the HP41CX by will adversly effect the time function on the machine. Also, if speeding up an HP41C will effect plug in modules such as quad mem and X-Functions? Thanks. TJK

The clock module in the machine has its own crystal so it should work fine along with most of the various ROM module. Problems can arise with the card reader, HP-IL module, and some of the other hardware peripherals. Most speedup mods to the machine had a way of turning them on and off.

The timer chips in the time module and 41CX (both normal and halfnut versions) have their own crystal and are not affected by the speedup mod. Nor should any ROM or RAM modules. But please remember that these modules were not designed to run at the higher speed, so some may not work correctly. You will just have to test all the functions of your machine if/when you've done the speedup to see if you have any modules that don't like it. IIRC, the card reader doesn't work properly on a speeded-up machine. The Wand normally works _better_ on a faster machine. And some HPIL functions have problems (particularly if you're using a tape drive and have a file that spans the 2 tracks -- the machine can think the tape is taking too long to rewind).
