Rubber keys: How're they lasting?
Message #1 Posted by David H Thompson on 1 July 2002, 6:37 p.m.

Hello, I don't have an HP 49G, but I was wondering; how are the controversial rubber keys standing up to daily use?

The HP49 is a strange beast. I have one Indonesian HP49, from when they first came out, that's been pounded on terribly, with no wear on the keys. I had 2 Chinese HP49s that I sent back to HP because in just a few months time the paint wore almost completely off. I also sent back an Indonesian HP49 because the screen scratched badly with no abuse at all. I now have 3 Chinese HP49s, all fairly new, and how they'll perform? - impossible to tell. I like the HP49 better than the TI89, but you can't trust to having just one, especially now that they've been discontinued.

The 49 really has been discontinued?! This is new to me! Since when have they been discontinued?

As far as I know hp49g hasn't been discontinued, and it will be top calculator for next curse "Back to School" promotion.. at least in Spain.

Thanks, J.Manrique

The distributor I buy from, Samson Cables, has told me the HP49 is a discontinued item.

What do you do that require the use of three 49G's? Just curious! Sam

I do a lot of on the keyboard programming. After all the programmers from the ACO were laid off,I knew that no new CAS features would be added, so if I wanted something, I had to program it myself. I'm very hard on equipment, I really use the hell out of stuff, so I always buy a backup of anything I like. One HP49 fell out of my pocket and down a cliff while surveying part of the ranch. I sent it back to HP, but I was honest about how I broke it, so they wouldn't warranty that one. In this special case of the HP49, I really like it, so 3 of them is actually a minimum number. I will probably buy a few more when I save a few more pennies.
