The battery is basically just two AA NiCad cells connected together at one end. Part of the gap between the cells is filled in on one side and completely on the other to make it hard to install backwards.

Hi;

just to add some info: all spices (30-series: 31, 32, 33, 34, 38) share the same battery pack, so, interchanging is always possible. The plastic + metal holder used in the original pack can (and should) be used to compose the new, rebuilt pack.
