Thanks, Jeff, you've answered a few questions.
The battery situation is that I tried three new batteries in the store without luck. I bought two batteries for a thermometer, which now doesn't work, so maybe those two batteries are no good. I've since put in three new batteries but still no go.
Regarding the screws, I failed to notice that one of the feet is missing.
