Having rebuilt a couple of these battery packs, I can confirm that the original configuration is 6 sub-C NiCd cells in series (7.2V total)
There is also a picofuse (wire ended fuse) in the circuit, it's normally inserted in the connection between the rear 2 rows of cells. I can't remember the rating, but I think it's 2A. If you have the original wiring to
the contacts and charger PCB then the red wire is, of course, +ve. If you don't have the wiring, I can look up the polarity of the contacts for you (or you can check inside the printer -- the power swtich is in series with the +ve lead).
