solve
Message #1 Posted by Antonio Toledo on 3 Oct 2001, 11:25 p.m.

Does anyone know how can I get the Solve function of HP calculators on MS Excel spreadsheet? Is there any routine/macro instruction available? I have an HP12C emulator to run on PC, so I think the above is possible. Thanks.

I'm not a "power user", but I think the "Solve" function in calculators is just a mini-spreadsheet. You can do an enormous "Solve" with Excel, with thousands of variables if you need them.

I apologize for shooting from the hip! After referring to a calculator manual, I see that Solve is specifically for finding roots. Off the top of my head, I don't know how you get a spreadsheet to automatically repeat a calculation till a limit is reached (or not).

Lotus 1-2-3 used to have (maybe still does?) a "backsolve" feature which adjusted a value of a given cell until a calculated cell (one which has a formula) produces another given value. I don't think MS would want to be upstaged, so look for that feature in Excel.

Also, HP produced a connectivity pack for the HP100/200LX. This had three disks with a DOS version of some of the palmtop's software. A solver (a 19BII clone implemention) was part of the calculator. You could look out on eBay for one of those. Part no. was HP F1021B.

Contact me off-list if you need any more help.

to add to the above discussion, excel does have a solver, as do lotus and quattro pro, though the implementation is a bit different from various calculator versions.

look under the Tools menu for Solver. There is extensive online Help. It is an optional install, so if it isn't present you can go back to Setup. Generally, you will select spreadsheet cells for Solver to adjust in order to manipulate the objective cell, which contains formulas or depends on the adjustable cells.

this should get you started solving.
