word problems
Message #1 Posted by db(martinez,california) on 9 Aug 2001, 5:45 p.m.

today i tried to read a program off my data cassette onto a coworkers 41c (serial # 2103A02779). it started the drive then said "try again". it did this several times using different ports etc. and after turning things on & off. i tried the same thing with my cx and it did fine the first time. then i tried to xeq. copy to get the un-revised version off the rom figuring that i'd make the changes by hand. that didn't work either, but it did when i tried it on my calculator. i checked the catalog and his c was accessing my il's functions (including readp and readsub). 1/ is there a problem with his version of 41? 2/ i'll try using a card reader. will that dam c tell me the same thing again? 3/ i have access to every printer that goes with these things and a wand. is there a way to print bar code? thanks.

db:

Excuse me for asking the obvious, but are you sure that you have enough free memory on the 41C? The CX of course has more RAM, perhaps other programs, data or key assignments are taking some of the 41C memory, leaving not enough free registers for the operation you are trying.

If (my) memory helps, TRY AGAIN only appears after PACKing memory in an attempt to free some resources...

Once upon a time I was so "nostalgic" about the 41C style that I wrote a dummy PACK function for my HP42S, which only displays a PACKING message followed by a TRY AGAIN, doing nothing else. Memory housekeeping is automatic in the HP42S, and you never will see it "packing" RAM.

picture homer simpson hitting his forehead and saying "doooo". of course! an empty c with a quad would still have a little bitty memory on defalt. soy muy baboso.
