HP 41CV without serial number
Message #1 Posted by Edwin Morales on 15 July 2001, 1:21 a.m.

I have three 41cv. Two of them were Singapore builded..it says the serial number and the label. In the third calculator, no serial number...it has a number hand graved: S from singapore but the label says Made in USA. I suppose that the original owner write the number but it does no match with Made in USA.

How it is possible that no serial number?. In my other two machines the serial number is machine graved.

I donīt think so because the label is on the back of the calculator. It is the same part where is writed the serial number. In this case it does not exist....only the hand engraved.

The label is the part that indicates the extended keyboard in yellow and says "Made in U.S.A." "Complies with the limits..." etc. and the space for serial number is in the same part of the calculator.

Hand engraved 2231S40880. "S" is from Singapore. Why if the serial number is OK, it was not machine engraved like other calculators? No signal of machine engraved....?????

Maybe in some time they used a sticker for the serial number_

Your unit probably originally had a standard back that was damaged (probably the upper screw bosses cracked) and was replaced with a blank back by HP. They then transfered the old serial number to the new back by hand.

Hi Edwin,

The calc that without serial number is a warranty replacement unit from HP. I.e. during that period, when ever you return a faulty 41’s to HP, instead of repairing it, HP will replace your faulty unit with the replacement (one with the blank serial number), usually HP will place two metal tags (like those of HP 35) bearing the old serial number (your original serial number) one at the back of the case (just below the blank serial number) and the second tag inside the battery compartment. At times, I have seen hand written number (with an engraving pen) on the blank space which I would presume that they have run-out of the metal tag.

The warranty replacement calc usually from Singapore, however, I have also seen some that made in U.S.A.

Regards,

Y K Wong.
